Celebration and Survival: Mechanics' Institutes Australia 2018
Proceedings of the Third National Conference of Mechanics’ Institutes, Schools of Arts and their ilk convened by the Mechanics’ Institutes of Victoria Inc. at Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute 16-18 November 2018
Mechanics’ Institutes Australia 2018 is the Third National Conference of Mechanics’ Institutes, Schools of Arts and their ilk. These Proceedings canvas widely the Conference themes of Celebration and Survival and aggregate much original research encompassing the past, present and future. Within these Proceedings, readers will find papers that are scholarly and analytic in their accounts of the contribution of Mechanics’ Institutes and Schools of Arts to colonial culture in Australia and to adult education here and in the United Kingdom. They will find warm, personal accounts of small communities’ relationships with their local Institutes’ buildings and books. The traditional and continuing roles of Institutes as independent libraries, as halls and social hubs in times of communal celebration or crisis are feelingly described in many papers. Community and identity have always been elemental in Mechanics’ Institutes. These Proceedings are an excellent celebration of the past and present of myriad Institutes around the world. The experiences and the ideas they share will be invaluable contributions to the survival, indeed to the continuing resurgence of Institutes in many places.
